Schloss Leopoldskron Today

A Schloss With a Mission

Schloss Leopoldskron, home of Salzburg Global, is known to many as the former residence of Max Reinhardt, renowned theater impresario and co-founder of the Salzburg Festival.

Though it is a national historic monument, the Schloss is not a museum—it is a living space for connection and exchange. Salzburg Global is where open-minded leaders from around the world gather for breakthrough conversations on pressing global issues.

The Schloss, the programmatic home of Salzburg Global, provides a unique setting for imagination, dialogue, and collaboration.

As you move through the building, you'll notice QR codes in different spaces and rooms. Each code will direct you to a page that provides further information about that area. We have also listed these pages below.

The Sound of Music

The Schloss is also known as a key filming location for “The Sound of Music” (1965).

The Schloss Park, the Schloss Terrace, and the Leopoldskroner Weiher all feature in several memorable scenes. In addition, the Schloss’s Venetian Salon inspired the set design for the von Trapp ballroom.

Today, fans of the film still seek out these locations and views, unaware they are standing where artistic reinvention has unfolded for centuries, long before and well beyond Hollywood.

CHANEL Fashion Show (2014)

In 2014, fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld reimagined Schloss Leopoldskron as an haute couture stage, echoing Max Reinhardt’s vision of theatrical splendor.

Models swept past frescoes and marble columns under crystal chandeliers. The show placed the Schloss once again at the center of global cultural conversation—demonstrating its enduring ability to inspire boundary-crossing creativity.

Curating the Schloss

Schloss Leopoldskron’s artistic legacy continues to evolve through its connection to living artists.

In recent years, Salzburg Global Fellows, many of whom explore questions of identity, justice, and belonging, have been able to share work that reflects the contemporary world inside this historic setting.

Their presence ensures the Schloss is not frozen in the past but actively engaged with today’s most urgent cultural and social dialogues.

Salzburg Global Programs

Since 1947, Salzburg Global has gathered over 40,000 Fellows from 170 countries for 1,100 sessions—creating opportunities for leaders of every kind to change the conversation on pressing issues of our time.

Programs have tackled issues from racial healing to climate action, media freedom to public policy.

Each gathering contributes a new chapter to the Schloss’s story, one defined not just by who it once housed, but by who it welcomes today.
