A Room of Ideas and Influence
This northeast corner room was Max Reinhardt’s meeting space—where he, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Richard Strauss first envisioned the Salzburg Festival in 1920.
Originally painted dusky pink with a red carpet believed to be Salzburg’s first, the room reflected Reinhardt’s theatrical flair.
Its proportions were reshaped in 1927 to better connect with the adjoining library, turning it into a creative threshold between imagination and action, between dream and dialogue.
A Gesamtkunstwerk for the 21st Century
Unveiled in 2023, the Red Salon’s reimagining was led by designer Ken Fulk and de Gournay, inspired by Reinhardt’s theatrical backdrops and creative spirit.
With muraled wood panels, a Louis XVI-style table, and curated color and light, the space was transformed into a “Gesamtkunstwerk”—a total work of art.
As Salzburg Global continues to host programs here, the room honors its past while embracing collaboration, imagination, and modern storytelling.
