The Elder Series, on display until the end of 2026 in the Meierhof Bar, is a multidisciplinary art and social impact project by Salzburg Global Fellow Malik Afegbua, born from personal loss and transformed into a global cultural movement. Following the death of his mother, Afegbua channeled his grief into a powerful creative exploration that celebrates elders as carriers of wisdom, resilience, beauty, and legacy. What resonated globally was not only the technical innovation, but the narrative intervention. The Elder Series disrupted dominant perceptions of aging, confronting the widespread assumption that later life is defined by decline or invisibility. Instead, it positioned elders at the center of visibility, dignity, and aesthetic power, reminding audiences that the desire for beauty, self-expression, and recognition does not diminish with age.
Malik Afegbua is a Nigerian visual artist and filmmaker based in Lagos, known for pioneering work that celebrates elderly fashion through AI-generated imagery.
