The photo exhibition “Stadtgefühl” explores the transformation of Salzburg as it navigates the tension between memory, everyday life, and the present. Curator Daniel Szelényi juxtaposes historical photographs by Gerti Deutsch, Josef Dapra and the Salzburg Museum with contemporary images by local photographer Siegrid Cain. He combines documentary photography with cultural-historical observation, creating an emotional connection to the city’s history through its images, atmospheres, and people. Architecture, snapshots, and visual axes engage in a visual dialogue that spans generations, conveying to the viewer a cross-epochal impression of the city. The focus is on the atmospheric essence of Salzburg: its local color, its social and cultural identity, and the traces of everyday life.
The juxtaposition of the images invites visitors to perceive the city not only as a historical ensemble but as a living organism—shaped by memory, change, and everyday experience. The exhibition is conceived as a photographic journey through time and, at the same time, as a reflection on identity, belonging, and the character of urban spaces.
Similar to observations made during a stroll through the city, the photographs are distributed throughout the Meierhof, with the majority located in the guest rooms.
“Stadtgefühl” is a collaboration with FOTOHOF and the Salzburg Museum.
