Mag. art., Dr. phil. Erna Heinz is a Viennese painter and tapestry artist whose work bridges fine art and textile tradition. After studying painting at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, philosophy at the University of Vienna, and tapestry weaving at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, she spent many years as a costume painter at the Vienna State Opera. Since 1998, she has lived and worked in Salzburg as an independent artist.
The exhibition Painting with Wool explores the development of tapestry weaving at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the 1950s – a period marked by artistic experimentation and renewal.
Rather than reproducing existing paintings in textile form, the focus was on creating original works directly on the loom. The result is a body of work that treats tapestry not as interpretation, but as an autonomous artistic medium in its own right.
