After a few more steps we enter Max Reinhardt’s favorite room. In 1926/27 he commissioned the library to be built as an exact replica of the monastery library in St. Gallen, Switzerland. The antique parquet floor came from the Urstein Palace. The signs over the book shelves were designed by the theater director and artist himself. |
Max Reinhardt had the library furnished like a living room and particularly enjoyed reading in front of the fireplace. A secret staircase led from the library directly to his former living area, thus symbolizing his personal desire for immediate access to this part of the palace. |
