The era of Max Reinhardt began in 1918 and affected Schloss Leopoldskron more than any other time since its erection. The theater director, who was famous throughout Europe, invested large amounts of money and passion to restore the palace to its original splendor. "...I always loved it (the palace) in a unique way; never as something ordinary. Those were my most precious, richest, and mature years..."

Reinhardt developed the concept of the Salzburg Festival along with the poet Hugo v. Hofmannsthal and the composer Richard Strauss. Against all odds, the Salzburg premiere of "Jedermann" took place on August 22nd,1920. Since then, Schloss Leopoldskron is considered the birthplace of the Salzburg Festival.
